The Norelco Spectra 8894xl sounds more like the name of a space ship in a Sci Fi movie than it does a razor. "This is Spectra 8894xl requesting clearance for landing, under fire from alien attackers!" That's kind of part of the appeal, though, to be honest. Remember when they were calling razors stuff like "The Matrix" and "Mach 4"? Shaver manufacturers know their demographic: Guys. Guys like action movies, fast cars and fighter jets, so why not name the razors likewise?
But anyways, tangent aside, the Norelco Spectra 8894xl is actually a pretty good electric shaver. The name sort of brings to mind "Spectre" while the 8894xl makes you think of high tech, and that's about right. If we had to make an analogy, we could describe this shaver as an efficient robot ghost. It slips over your face with ease, removing hair with a touch, and before you know it, you're clean shaven in half the time it would take with a disposable plastic safety razor.
The shaving head is incredibly responsive, capable of twisting, turning and compensating for even the cleftest of cleft chins, the most sculpted of high cheekbones, and the dimpliest of dimples. It really is like shaving with a piece of formfitting silk.
So who is this shaver for? Well, we think that the Norelco Spectra 8894xl will appeal in particular to people who just want a perfect shave. It's not quite as lightning fast as the Speed XL Shaver, but it performs a little better in terms of just getting you that great smooth shave you're after.
Of course, most importantly, it DOES pass the Traffic Jam Test: Like any worthwhile electric shaver, it gives you the same great performance whether you're shaving in the bathroom or in the rear view mirror in a traffic jam on the way to work.
Norelco has really been coming out with some cool shavers lately. This is one of their more subtle innovations, just providing better responsiveness and a smoother shave, not quite as noticeably gimmicky as the Norelco Cool Skin or Speed XL Shaver, but every bit as significant a step forward in making the world's best electric shavers that much better. We're willing to bet that this is one of those products that, in a year or two's time, will have become the new standard. Mark our words, the Spectra 8894xl is going to be the template upon which responsive shaver heads will be built in the coming years.
